A-G requirements are a sequence of high school courses that represent the basic level of academic preparation for post-secondary education. Each subject requires a certain number of years of study and a passing grade of C or better. Note that as a first-time freshman applicant, you must complete all A-G requirements by your high school graduation date.

The A-G Matching page in the application lists the A-G subject totals based on the courses you reported in the High School Coursework and College Coursework sections. The Subject column displays the requirement, and the Years column displays the number of years you have fulfilled. Years are calculated according to your high school's academic term, such as semester, trimester, etc. Your Total Years calculation and your resulting Calculated GPA appear at the bottom of the table.

Courses without an A-G subject area will not be counted in your GPA or counted toward fulfilling minimum admission requirements. Any courses that you received a D or an F grade in will not be included in your Total Years calculation; however, these courses will still be included in your calculated GPA.

You must either accept or update this information. The campus will use it to make an initial admissions decision, so ensure you are as accurate as possible. If you have any questions about requirement matching, contact your high school counselor or the campus you are applying to.

Update A-G Courses

Click Update A-G Courses.
Click on the arrows next to each Academic Year to display all courses for that year/grade level.
Ensure that each course contains an A-G area in the right column (refer to the guide on the right side of the page if you are unsure which area should be chosen).
Once you complete your updates, click Save and Continue to return to the Summary Screen.

Notes

You should only enter courses that fulfill A-G subject requirements, and all courses entered must be matched to an A-G area.
If you don't match a course to an A-G area, a message alerts you when you submit your application. You can then return to your application and match your course to the appropriate A-G subject requirements or confirm that you don’t want to match the course and continue submitting your application.
Area G (College-Preparatory Elective (1 Year)) may be fulfilled with a year of coursework reported that fulfills categories A-F and was taken in excess of the minimum requirement.
GPA calculation is based on the grade level and A-G categories assigned to each course. A 9th-grade course or a course without an A-G category will not be included in the GPA.
College or university courses taken concurrently while in high school must be reported in the College Coursework section for each college or university attended. Be sure to complete the College Coursework section before completing A-G Matching.
College or university courses entered in the College Coursework section for one semester will be automatically counted as one full year of high school credit.

A-G Subject Requirements Satisfied by an Alternate Method

If you have not satisfied the A-G Subject Requirements through your high school coursework units, you may meet these requirements via test results, validation, or waiver (i.e., in the case of proficiency in a LOTE). You must still report all completed high school coursework and grades earned in order to calculate your high school GPA correctly.

Subject Matter Validation

For all courses in Mathematics (Area C), Language Other Than English (Area E), and Chemistry (Area D2): Satisfactory completion of a second semester will validate a D or F grade earned in the first semester.

Satisfactory completion of a final year of study validates prior study in Math and Languages Other Than English (LOTE). Completion of an advanced course in the same subject presupposes knowledge of the previous course(s).

Satisfactory completion of a second year of LOTE (Language Other Than English) will validate the first year.
Satisfactory completion of Algebra II (intermediate) will validate Algebra 1 (elementary), but will not validate Geometry.
Satisfactory completion of a statistics course for which Algebra II is a stated prerequisite can validate both years of Algebra, but NOT Geometry. The CSU high school requirements in mathematics (Algebra 1, Geometry, and Intermediate Algebra) may be validated with higher-level college preparatory mathematics courses such as Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, or Calculus. Integrated math studies that appear on the UC "A-G" list will satisfy the subject requirements certified on the UC list. Cal State Apply policy allows for a maximum of two semesters worth of credit for Algebra 1-classified classes, regardless of how many semesters were taken. This applies to two-year Algebra 1 classes offered at some high schools.

Math

A grade of C or higher in the second semester validates a D or F earned in the first semester. Enter the valid grades earned with a consecutive row with the same course title and a grade of Pass for the first semester. Select No Grade/No Course for the second semester.
A grade of C or higher in the second semester of a sequential Mathematics course validates the prior year. Enter the valid grades earned with a consecutive row with the same course title and a grade of Pass for both semesters.
A grade of C or higher in the second semester of an Advanced Mathematics* course validates the entire three-year subject requirement. Enter the valid grades earned with a consecutive row with the same course title and grades of Pass until the three-year requirement is completed.

*Advanced Math courses are designated on the UC Course Management Portal.

Chemistry

A grade of C or higher in the second semester validates a D or F earned in the first semester. Enter the valid grades earned with a consecutive row with the same course title. Select No Grade/No Course for the first semester and select Pass for the second semester.

Language Other Than English (LOTE)

A grade of C or higher in the second semester validates a D or F earned in the first semester. Enter the valid grades earned with a consecutive row with the same course title. Select No Grade/No Course for the first semester and select Pass for the second semester.
A grade of C or higher in the second semester of a second year or higher in a foreign language course will validate the entire two-year subject requirement. Enter the valid grades earned with a consecutive row with the same course title. Select No Grade/No Course for the first semester and select Pass for the second semester. If only the second level or higher has been completed, enter the actual course completed with grades earned. On a consecutive row with the same course title, enter grades of Pass until the two-year requirement is completed.
If you take a one-year, LOTE college-level course that qualifies for two years of LOTE credit, add the one-year LOTE course again and select CR or P (for Pass) for the grade and enter "0.00" for the credits. The two-year requirement is then completed.

A-G GPAs

Your A-G GPA is calculated using the grades from all college prep A-G courses completed after 9th grade. Courses with a D or F grade reported in High School Coursework will not be counted in the A-G subject totals but will be included in your GPA calculation.Campuses will use a combination of your A-G GPA and supplemental factors to determine admission eligibility.
